Works of art each have their own story and when joined in a series, the artist allows them to not just tell their own individual story, but also the greater story of their collective whole.
In this episode, we explore “The Story of the Ship” series by Harry Neyland (1924 Oil on Canvas). It is a series of 5 works – a first for Beyond the Frame, but also the first 5 oil paintings in the Museum’s collection. We follow the story of this ship through each painting, and are guided both by the artist and the symbolism of this series. The connections between these works of art and the Museum inspires us to look a little deeper and explore the concept of life cycles.
This series is made possible by the generous support of the Newport News Arts Commission and the York County Arts Commission.
