Early Childhood: What Floats Your Boat?

Our talented team of Museum educators are committed to providing an engaging experience that brings SOL-related content to life for your students. Duration:  60 minutes

This interactive outreach program is designed to spark curiosity and hands-on learning for young explorers. Activities include:

  • Buoyancy Exploration: Students will experiment with various materials to discover what makes objects float or sink.
  • Story Time: Children will enjoy an entertaining and informative story about boats, learning about different types and how they navigate the water.
  • Boat Building Craft: Each student will create their own boat using a paper sail and a pool noodle, combining creativity with practical learning about buoyancy.

Join us for a program of discovery, storytelling, and crafting, where young minds will learn about the principles of floating and sinking in a playful and engaging environment.  This program is offered as an outreach, so we will bring the fun to you!

Learning Objectives

Students will: 

  • be able to identify items that sink and float.
  • be able to label heavy/light items. 
  • be able to follow directions.

  • Uses comparative language to describe and compare objects using attributes (e.g., longer, shorter, lighter, heavier, etc.) (CD3.5h)
  • Remembers and follows 2-step directions to complete simple tasks (e.g., “wash your hands then help prepare or eat a snack”) (APL3.2l)
  • Asks or answers questions about what is happening in a book or story (CLLD2.2k)
  • Retells 1-2 key events from a story (CLLD2.2l)

Pricing:

Payment can be made before the program, or we can invoice following your program.

  • Programs at the Museum are $4.50 per student.
    All adults accompanying a field trip are free.
  • Programs at your location are $4.50 per student.
  • Virtual education programs are $125 per program.

Reservations are required for all programs and are booked on a first-come, first-served basis. Programs fill quickly in the fall and spring, so make your reservations a minimum of two weeks in advance.
