About the Lecture
Pulitzer-prize-winning historian James M. McPherson considers William Keeler’s letters from the USS Monitor and the USS Florida to be among the best of the many published collections of Civil War letters and among the very best of naval letters. In this presentation, McLandress delves into Keeler’s adventure-filled life, followed by a sampling of his letters, focusing on his often humorous and always colorful descriptions of people he encountered. McLandress has recently published a complete and unabridged version of the letters entitled Ink, Dirt and Powder Smoke: The Civil War Letters of William F. Keeler, Paymaster on the USS Monitor.
