About the Lecture
President Lincoln came to Fort Monroe, Virginia on May 6, 1862, to motivate Major General George B. McClellan and his Army of the Potomac forward toward Richmond. While in Hampton Roads, he organized the capture of Norfolk, Virginia. His leadership resulted in the destruction of CSS Virginia. This action opened the riverine door to Richmond and supported McClellan’s advance against Richmond.
