About the Lecture
Samual Dana Greene was executive officer of USS Monitor. His leadership helped to save the ironclad from sinking during Monitor’s trip to Hampton Roads, and he commanded the turret during Monitor’s showdown with CSS Virginia. When the Union ironclad’s commander, Lt. John Worden, was wounded, Greene took command of Monitor and maintained a defensive position to save the Union fleet in Hampton Roads on March 9, 1862.
