Join The Mariners’ Museum and Park during the month of February as we celebrate Black History Month through programs, living history, lectures, and hands-on activities for children and adults. All programs are free with $1 Museum admission.
The nation of Egypt, while located in North Africa, has a history that is among the oldest in the world and is distinct from the rest of the continent. Do Egyptians today associate their culture with the wider narrative of African history? Do Egyptians – past and present – consider themselves “black?” In today’s world, the notion of where and how Egypt fits with the rest of Africa is more complex than simple geography.
During this program, Museum content developer Erika Cosme explores the modern debate about Egypt’s relationship with Africa’s history, race, and culture, while discussing the ways Egyptians have viewed themselves over the centuries.
