Conservation Corner: Material Identification by Microscopy

August 15, 2018 @ 1:30 PM - 2:30 PM EDT

Presented by Paige Schmidt
FREE with $1 admission

Learn about the complex steps involved in conserving historical artifacts, including parts of the USS Monitor. Microscopy is an important tool used in conservation to assist with material identification. From identifying different woods, to fibers and furs, microscopy gives us a closer look at what objects are made out of, which assists with treatment decisions, and adds to our understanding of an object’s history and construction. Come take a closer looks at materials with us! The activity will be held on the ground floor of the Batten Conservation Complex.
