Following the disaster of Battle of Cold Harbor in June 3, 1864, Gen. Ulysses S. Grant sought to slip across the James River to capture Petersburg, Virginia. This manufacturing center of 18,000 people was a critical junction for five railroads. The town’s capture would force Gen. Robert E. Lee to abandon Richmond. Grant’s move was initially blocked by a small Confederate force commanded by Gen. P.G.T. Beauregard. The Union’s failure to capture Petersburg between June 9 and June 18, 1864, caused the brutal ten-month siege of Petersburg.
