One of the more successful political generals during the Civil War was John A. Logan. Logan fought during the Mexican War and then served as a congressman, representing Illinois. He served with distinction during the Vicksburg Campaign. After the war, Logan returned to politics serving as a congressman and senator. Logan was the second commander of the Grand Army of the Republic and helped to establish Decoration Day, later known as Memorial Day.
