The commerce raider CSS Shenandoah, formerly known as the British merchant ship Sea King, was commanded by Lt. James I. Waddell. Between October 19, 1864, and June 27, 1865, the raider captured 38 Union ships, mostly New Bedford whalers. When Waddell learned that the war was over, he sailed Shenandoah back to Great Britain where the ship surrendered at Liverpool on November 6, 1865.
