Conservation
in Mariners’ Park

The Mariners’ Park is home to a diverse ecosystem of plants, animals, and other organisms. Our team’s environmental conservation efforts focus on the Park’s living collection, including the Mariners’ Forest, Lake, and Wildlife. The Mariners’ ensures the Living Collection’s health and sustainability with the support of donors, volunteers, and strategic partners.

The Next Generation of Environmental Stewards

In the summer of 2021, The Mariners’ was awarded the Bay – Watershed Education and Training (B-WET) grant. Funded by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), B-WET provides students with hands-on learning experiences in their local watershed. Working with community partners, our team is engaging ninth-grade Newport News high school students in a restoration project on Mariners’ Lake.

Bumblebee Learning Garden

The Bumblebee Learning Garden is a pollinator-friendly space that changes and shifts with the seasons. The garden is used to teach local students about the importance of pollinators, native plants, and ways they can protect sensitive habitats in our community.
