Camera clubs provide an opportunity for photographers to reach a wider audience and to have their work criticized on its artistic and technical merits. Beginning in 1948, The Mariners’ Museum and Park and the James River Camera Club co-hosted an annual juried exhibition of marine photography each spring, in which amateur and professional photographers submitted their prints illustrating man’s relationship with the sea.
With each year’s juried exhibition, the displayed photographs from local and international photographers became part of the Museum’s Library collection. This retrospective photography exhibition, opening October 7, will present a multitude of photographs collected from 1948 through 1972 exploring man’s connection to the ocean.
