Jeffreen Hayes and Professor Hollis Pruitt will work together to present this fascinating lecture on the influence of African-Americans on the workforce of Newport News in the 1930s. Ms. Hayes, a PhD candidate in American Studies at the College of William Mary, will address the interpretation of African-Americans in the visual arts with particular emphasis on the work of Thomas Skinner (whose murals are featured in the Building Better Ships exhibition). Prof. Pruitt of Thomas Nelson Community College will speak about the importance of African-American workers at the Newport News shipyard in the 1930s.
